Tommaso Parentucelli Cardinal "Bononiensis",[1] Cardinal Priest of Santa Susanna, Bishop of Bologna, was elected Bishop of Rome on 6 March 1447 in the basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome, taking the name Nicholas V, and was crowned on 9 March at the age of 49 years.

POPE NICHOLAS V (1447-1455)

His Holiness Pope Nicholas V died on 24 March 1455 in Rome, in the 9th year of his pontificate, at the age of 57 years. He was buried on 3 April in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred to the Grottoes of the same basilica in the reign of Pope Paul V.

Alfonso de Borja y Cabanilles Cardinal "Valentinensis," Cardinal Priest of Santi Quattro Coronati, Bishop of Valencia, was elected Bishop of Rome on 8 April 1455 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Callistus III, and was crowned on 20 April at the age of 76 years.

POPE CALLISTUS III (1455-1458)

His Holiness Pope Callistus III died on 6 August 1458 in Rome, in the 4th year of his pontificate, at the age of 79 years. He was buried on 16 August in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 30 January 1610 to the church of Santa Maria di Monserrato, Rome.

Enea Silvio Piccolomini Cardinal "Senensis," Cardinal Priest of Santa Sabina, Bishop of Siena and of Ermland, Writer of Apostolic Briefs, was elected Bishop of Rome on 19 August 1458 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Pius II, and was crowned on 3 September at the age of 52 years.

POPE PIUS II (1458-1464)

His Holiness Pope Pius II died on 14 August 1464 in Ancona, in the 6th year of his pontificate, at the age of 58 years. He was buried in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred to the basilica of Sant'Andrea della Valle, Rome, in the reign of Pope Paul V.

Pietro Barbo Cardinal "S. Marci," Cardinal Priest of San Marco, Bishop of Vicenza, was elected Bishop of Rome on 30 August 1464 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Paul II, and was crowned on 16 September at the age of 47 years.

POPE PAUL II (1464-1471)

His Holiness Pope Paul II died on 26 July 1471 in Rome, in the 7th year of his pontificate, at the age of 54 years. He was buried on 5 August in the Grottoes of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica.

Francesco della Rovere, O.F.M.Conv., Cardinal "S. Petri ad vincula," Cardinal Priest of San Pietro in Vincoli, was elected Bishop of Rome on 10 August 1471 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Sixtus IV, and was consecrated to the episcopate and crowned on 25 August at the age of 57 years.

POPE SIXTUS IV (1471-1484)

His Holiness Pope Sixtus IV died on 12 August 1484 in Rome, in the 14th year of his pontificate, at the age of 70 years. He was buried in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred to the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament of the basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli during the reign of Pope Urban VIII.

Giovanni Battista Cibò Cardinal "Melfitanus," Cardinal Priest of Santa Cecilia, Bishop of Molfetta, Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals, was elected Bishop of Rome on 29 August 1484 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Innocent VIII, and was crowned on 12 September at the age of 51 or 52 years.

POPE INNOCENT VIII (1484-1492)

His Holiness Pope Innocent VIII died on 25 July 1492 in Rome, in the 8th year of his pontificate, at the age of 59 or 60 years. He was buried in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica.

Rodrigo de Lanzol-Borja y Borja Cardinal "Vicecancellarius," Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina with the title Santa Maria in Via Lata in commendam, Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, Archbishop of Valencia, Bishop of Cartagena, of Eger, and of Mallorca, Vice-Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church, Archpriest of the Patriarchal Liberian Basilica, was elected Bishop of Rome on 11 August 1492 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Alexander VI[2], and was crowned on 26 August at the age of 61 years.

POPE ALEXANDER VI (1492-1503)

His Holiness Pope Alexander VI died on 18 August 1503 in Rome, in the 12th year of his pontificate, at the age of 72 years. He was buried on 19 August in the church of Santa Maria della Febbre, Rome, and his mortal remains were transferred on 30 January 1610 to the church of Santa Maria di Monserrato, Rome.

Francesco Nanni-Todeschini-Piccolomini Cardinal "Senensis," Cardinal Deacon of Sant'Eustachio, Administrator of Siena with the title of Archbishop ad personam, and of Fermo, was elected Bishop of Rome on 22 September 1503 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Pius III, was ordained to the priesthood on 30 September, was consecrated to the episcopate on 1 October, and was crowned on 8 October at the age of 64 years.

POPE PIUS III (1503)

His Holiness Pope Pius III died on 18 October 1503 in Rome, in the 1st year of his pontificate, at the age of 64 years. He was buried in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred to the basilica of Sant'Andrea della Valle, Rome, in the reign of Pope Paul V.

Petri ad vincula," Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri retaining the title of San Pietro in Vincoli in commendam, Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, Archbishop of Avignon, Administrator of Vercelli, Major Penitentiary, Archpriest of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica, Legate in Avignon, was elected Bishop of Rome on 1 November 1503 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Julius II, and was crowned on 26 November, at the age of 59 years.

POPE JULIUS II (1503-1513)

His Holiness Pope Julius II died on 21 February 1513 in Rome, in the 10th year of his pontificate, at the age of 69 years. He was buried in the basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli, and his mortal remains were transferred to the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament of the same basilica in the reign of Pope Urban VIII.

Giovanni Cardinal de' Medici,[3] Cardinal Deacon of Santa Maria in Domnica, Administrator of Amalfi, Legate in Bologna and Romagna, was elected Bishop of Rome on 9 March 1513 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Leo X, was ordained to the priesthood on 15 March, was consecrated to the episcopate on 17 March, and was crowned on 19 March, at the age of 37 years.

POPE LEO X (1513-1521)

His Holiness Pope Leo X died on 1 December 1521 in Rome, in the 9th year of his pontificate, at the age of 46 years. He was buried in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 6 June 1542 to the basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome.

Adriaan Florenszoon Dedel Cardinal "Dertusiensis," Cardinal Priest of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Bishop of Tortosa, Lieutenant General of Castile and Leon, was elected Bishop of Rome in absentia on 9 January 1522 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, at the age of 62 years, taking the name Adrian VI, and was crowned on 31 August, at the age of 63 years.

POPE ADRIAN VI (1522-1523)

His Holiness Pope Adrian VI died on 14 September 1523 in Rome, in the 2nd year of his pontificate, at the age of 64 years. He was buried in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 11 August 1533 to the church of Santa Maria dell'Anima, Rome.

Giulio Zenobio Cardinal de' Medici, Cardinal Priest of San Lorenzo in Damaso, Archbishop of Florence and of Narbonne, Vice-Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church, Legate in all Tuscany, was elected Bishop of Rome on 19 November 1523 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Clement VII, and was crowned on 26 November, at the age of 48 years.

POPE CLEMENT VII (1523-1534)

His Holiness Pope Clement VII died on 25 September 1534 in Rome, in the 11th year of his pontificate, at the age of 56 years. He was buried in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 6 June 1542 to the basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome.

Alessandro Cardinal Farnese, Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri, Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, Bishop of Parma, Administrator of Saint-Pons de Thomières, Archpriest of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica, was elected Bishop of Rome on 12 October 1534 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Paul III, and was crowned on 3 November, at the age of 66 years.

POPE PAUL III (1534-1549)

His Holiness Pope Paul III died on 10 November 1549 in Rome, in the 16th year of his pontificate, at the age of 81 years. He was buried on the same day in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 15 January 1629 to the apse of the same basilica.

Giovanni Maria Ciocchi Cardinal del Monte, Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina, Bishop of Pavia, Legate in Bologna, was elected Bishop of Rome on 7 February 1550 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Julius III, and was crowned on 22 February, at the age of 62 years.

POPE JULIUS III (1550-1555)

His Holiness Pope Julius III died on 23 March 1555 in Rome, in the 6th year of his pontificate, at the age of 67 years. He was buried on 24 March in the Grottoes of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica.

Marcello Cervini Cardinal "S. Crucis," Cardinal Priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Administrator of Gubbio, Librarian of the Holy Roman Church, was elected Bishop of Rome on 9 April 1555 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Marcellus II, and was consecrated to the episcopate and crowned on 10 April, at the age of 53 years.

POPE MARCELLUS II (1555)

His Holiness Pope Marcellus II died on 1 May 1555 in Rome, in the 1st year of his pontificate, at the age of 53 years. He was buried on 2 May in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 16 October 1606 to the Grottoes of the same basilica.

Giovanni Pietro Carafa Cardinal "Neapolitanus," Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri, Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, Archbishop of Naples, Inquisitor General of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition, was elected Bishop of Rome on 23 May 1555 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Paul IV, and was crowned on 26 May, at the age of 78 years.

POPE PAUL IV (1555-1559)

His Holiness Pope Paul IV died on 18 August 1559 in Rome, in the 5th year of his pontificate, at the age of 83 years. He was buried on 19 August in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 2 October 1566 to the basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome.

[1] In this period Cardinals were known popularly by their title, diocese, place of birth, etc., and not frequently by their surname.
[2] He should be Alexander V, not being able to consider legitimate Antipope Alexander V of the Council of Pisa (1409-1410).
