His Eminence Fabio Cardinal Chigi, Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria del Popolo, Bishop of Imola, Secretary of State, was elected Bishop of Rome on 7 April 1655 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Alexander VII, and was crowned on 18 April, at the age of 56 years.

POPE ALEXANDER VII (1655-1667)

His Holiness Pope Alexander VII died on 22 May 1667 in Rome, in the 13th year of his pontificate, at the age of 68 years. He was buried on 25 May in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica.

His Eminence Giulio Cardinal Rospigliosi, Cardinal Priest of San Sisto, Secretary of State, was elected Bishop of Rome on 20 June 1667 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Clement IX, and was crowned on 26 June, at the age of 67 years.

POPE CLEMENT IX (1667-1669)

His Holiness Pope Clement IX died on 9 December 1669 in Rome, in the 3rd year of his pontificate, at the age of 69 years. He was buried on 12 December in the Patriarchal Liberian Basilica.

His Eminence Emilio Bonaventura Cardinal Altieri, Cardinal Priest,[1] former Bishop of Camerino, Prefect of the Cubiculi of His Holiness, was elected Bishop of Rome on 29 April 1670 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Clement X, and was crowned on 11 May, at the age of 79 years.

POPE CLEMENT X (1670-1676)

His Holiness Pope Clement X died on 22 July 1676 in Rome, in the 7th year of his pontificate, at the age of 86 years. He was buried on 26 July in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 15 October 1691 to the Chapel of St. Petronilla of the same basilica.

His Eminence Benedetto Cardinal Odescalchi, Cardinal Priest of Sant'Onofrio, former Bishop of Novara, was elected Bishop of Rome on 21 September 1676 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Innocent XI, and was crowned on 4 October, at the age of 65 years.

BLESSED POPE INNOCENT XI (1676-1689)

His Holiness Pope Innocent XI died on 12 August 1689 in Rome, in the 13th year of his pontificate, at the age of 78 years. He was buried on 16 August in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 26 July 1701 to the Grottoes of the same basilica. The diocesan process for his canonization was initiated on 11 April 1691, his heroic virtues were proclaimed on 15 November 1955 by the Ven. Pope Pius XII, and he was beatified on 7 October 1956 by the same Roman Pontiff. His mortal remains were afterwards transferred to the altar of the Chapel of Saint Sebastian of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica. They were transferred on 8 April 2011 to the altar of the Transfiguration of the Papal Vatican Basilica. His feast is kept on 12 August, and is in Rome an optional Memorial and in the Vatican an obligatory Memorial.

His Eminence Pietro Vito Cardinal Ottoboni, Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina, Sub-Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, Secretary of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition, was elected Bishop of Rome on 6 October 1689 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Alexander VIII, and was crowned on 16 October, at the age of 79 years.

POPE ALEXANDER VIII (1689-1691)

His Holiness Pope Alexander VIII died on 1 February 1691 in Rome, in the 2nd year of his pontificate, at the age of 80 years. He was buried on 5 February in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 18 February 1706 within the same basilica.

His Eminence Antonio Maria Cardinal Pignatelli del Rastrello, Cardinal Priest of San Pancrazio, Archbishop of Naples, was elected Bishop of Rome on 12 July 1691 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Innocent XII, and was crowned on 15 July, at the age of 76 years.

POPE INNOCENT XII (1691-1700)

His Holiness Pope Innocent XII died on 27 September 1700 in Rome, in the 10th year of his pontificate, at the age of 85 years. He was buried on 1 October in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica.

His Eminence Giovanni Francesco Cardinal degli Albani, Cardinal Priest of San Silvestro in Capite, Secretary of Apostolic Briefs, was elected Bishop of Rome on 23 November 1700 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Clement XI, was consecrated to the episcopate on 30 November and crowned on 8 December, at the age of 51 years.

POPE CLEMENT XI (1700-1721)

His Holiness Pope Clement XI died on 19 March 1721 in Rome, in the 21st year of his pontificate, at the age of 71 years. He was buried on 23 March in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 21 March 1722 within the same basilica.

His Eminence Michelangelo Cardinal dei Conti, dei duchi di Poli, Cardinal Priest of Santi Quirico e Giulitta, former Bishop of Viterbo e Toscanella with the title of Archbishop ad personam, was elected Bishop of Rome on 8 May 1721 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Innocent XIII, and was crowned on 18 May, at the age of 66 years.

POPE INNOCENT XIII (1721-1724)

His Holiness Pope Innocent XIII died on 7 March 1724 in Rome, in the 3rd year of his pontificate, at the age of 68 years. He was buried on 12 March in the Grottoes of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica.

His Eminence Vincenzo Maria Pietro Francesco Cardinal degli Orsini, duca di Gravina, O.P., Cardinal Bishop of Porto and Santa Rufina, Archbishop of Benevento, was elected Bishop of Rome on 29 May 1724 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Benedict XIV but shortly thereafter changing his name to Benedict XIII,[2] and was crowned on 4 June, at the age of 75 years.

SERVANT OF GOD POPE BENEDICT XIII (1724-1730)

His Holiness Pope Benedict XIII died on 21 February 1730 in Rome, in the 6th year of his pontificate, at the age of 81 years. He was buried on 25 February in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 23 February 1733 to the basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome. The diocesan process for his canonization was initiated on 21 February 1931 by Pope Pius XI.

His Eminence Lorenzo Cardinal Corsini dei marchesi di Sismano, Cardinal Bishop of Frascati, Prefect of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature of Justice, was elected Bishop of Rome on 12 July 1730 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Clement XII, and was crowned on 16 July, at the age of 78 years.

POPE CLEMENT XII (1730-1740)

His Holiness Pope Clement XII died on 6 February 1740 in Rome, in the 10th year of his pontificate, at the age of 87 years. He was buried on 10 February in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 27 July 1742 to the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica.

His Eminence Prospero Lorenzo Cardinal Lambertini, Cardinal Priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Archbishop of Bologna, was elected Bishop of Rome on 17 August 1740 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Benedict XIV, and was crowned on 21 (or 22) August, at the age of 65 years.

POPE BENEDICT XIV (1740-1758)

His Holiness Pope Benedict XIV died on 3 May 1758 in Rome, in the 18th year of his pontificate, at the age of 83 years. He was buried on 7 May in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica.

His Eminence Carlo Cardinal Rezzonico dei conti della Torre, Cardinal Priest of San Marco, Bishop of Padua, was elected Bishop of Rome on 6 July 1758 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Clement XIII, and was crowned on 16 July, at the age of 65 years.

POPE CLEMENT XIII (1758-1769)

His Holiness Pope Clement XIII died on 2 February 1769 in Rome, in the 11th year of his pontificate, at the age of 75 years. He was buried on 8 February in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 27 September 1774 within the same basilica.

His Eminence Lorenzo Francesco Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Cardinal Ganganelli, O.F.M.Conv., Cardinal Priest of Santi Dodici Apostoli, Consultor of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition, was elected Bishop of Rome on 19 May 1769 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Clement XIV, was consecrated to the episcopate on 28 May and crowned on 4 June, at the age of 63 years.

POPE CLEMENT XIV (1769-1774)

His Holiness Pope Clement XIV died on 22 September 1774 in Rome, in the 6th year of his pontificate, at the age of 68 years. He was buried on 27 September in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 21 January 1802 to the basilica of Santi Dodici Apostoli, Rome.

His Eminence Giovanni Angelo Cardinal Braschi, Cardinal Priest of Sant'Onofrio, was elected Bishop of Rome on 15 February 1775 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Pius VI, and was consecrated to the episcopate and crowned on 22 February, at the age of 57 years.

POPE PIUS VI (1775-1799)

His Holiness Pope Pius VI died on 29 August 1799 in the citadel of Valence, France, in the 25th year of his pontificate, at the age of 81 years. He was buried on 29 January 1800 in Valence, and his mortal remains were transferred on 17 February 1802 to the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, where on 18 February he was buried in the Grottoes of the same basilica.

[1] Emilio Bonaventura Cardinal Altieri was created a Cardinal Priest in the consistory of 29 November 1669, but never received a title or the scarlet galero because of the death of Pope Clement IX on 9 December and his own election in the subsequent conclave.
[2] Pedro Martínez de Luna Cardinal "De Aragonia" had reigned as Antipope (1394-1423) with the name Benedict XIII.
